Construction Technology of TPO Waterproof Membrane on Color Steel Tile Steel Structure Roof

1. Project Overview

TPO waterproof membrane is widely used in waterproof renovation and new waterproof projects of steel structure color steel tile roofs. It features excellent aging resistance, UV resistance, great low-temperature flexibility and puncture resistance. Suitable for roof projects of factories, warehouses, large venues and other buildings, it is the mainstream material for high-grade single-ply roof waterproofing in China.

2. Pre-construction Preparation

1. Base Inspection & Treatment
Clean dust, oil stains, rust and burrs on the surface of color steel tiles. Derust and anti-corrode rusted areas. Inspect overlaps, self-tapping screws, roof ridges, gutters and other details. Fasten loose fittings and replace damaged panels to ensure the base is flat, firm and dry.

2. Material & Equipment Preparation
Adopt thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) waterproof membrane meeting national standards, together with matching welding accessories, edge fixing strips and sealant. Prepare automatic hot air welders, hand welding guns, utility knives, pressure rollers, tape measures and other tools. All equipment shall be debugged in advance.

3. Safety & Technical Disclosure
Constructors shall be familiar with hot air welding procedures. Anti-slip protection must be worn for roof work. Outdoor construction is forbidden in strong wind, rain, snow weather or when the temperature is below -5℃.

3. Main Construction Procedures

Base cleaning → Reinforcement for detailed joints → Layout & snapping lines → Membrane laying → Hot air welding of overlaps → Edge fixing & sealing → Finished product protection

1. Reinforcement for Detailed Joints
Additional TPO reinforcement layers shall be installed at water-prone positions including roof ridges, gutters, fan bases, daylighting panel edges and parapet roots. The width of additional layers shall be no less than 500 mm.

2. Membrane Laying
Lay TPO membranes according to snapped lines. Lay the long side of membranes along the roof drainage direction. The overlap width of long sides ≥80 mm, overlap width of short sides ≥100 mm. Lay membranes naturally with proper relaxation, avoid forced stretching.

3. Hot Air Welding
Use automatic hot air welder for overlap welding. Adjust welding temperature and moving speed properly to form continuous, full seams without cold welding or missing welding. Treat short-side overlaps as T-joints to prevent water seepage. Roll the seams tightly with pressure rollers after welding, and inspect sealing performance after cooling.

4. Edge Sealing
Fix membrane edges mechanically with metal strips, then seal tightly with special sealant. All fasteners shall be fully covered under the membrane to avoid water leakage through nail holes.

4. Quality Acceptance Standards

1. Membranes shall be laid straight without damage, hollowing or wrinkles.

2. Welds shall be continuous and firm; vacuum leak detection and manual edge prying can be applied for inspection.

3. All detailed joints are well reinforced and sealed.

4. Water ponding or water spraying test can be carried out after completion to verify overall waterproof performance.

5. Finished Product Protection & Maintenance

Do not puncture with sharp tools or roll heavy loads on finished membranes. Avoid damaging the waterproof layer during later roof maintenance. Regularly inspect welds and sealing edges. Repair cracks and unwelded areas timely to extend the service life of roof waterproofing system.
